Many years ago I worked early mornings delivering newspapers in Falmouth. Alone and quietly driving my route, I often listened to Gospel music, singing along as if I were a part of the choir. Those songs would often follow me through the day, I’d find myself returning to the words and melodies as I struggled with a situation. They say music calms the beast and I certainly found this true on more than a few occasions.
Singing has always been a most enjoyable part of my life. From fun little Girl Scout songs to six part choirs, there is a joy that comes from singing that goes deep into my soul. I can imagine Christ’s disciples coming from that special last meal with Him joining together in the songs of their time and faith. The singing would have brought them together in a way just walking and talking would not.
Sunday mornings are a formal time of praise and worship that music greatly enhances. It is so much a part of our Lutheran tradition. The closing song of our service sends us on our way and gives us a base to contemplate the Word we’ve just been given.
